Self-cleaning glass pane – a simple way to keep windows clean

Self-cleaning glass pane is a modern technology to save us from the ever-present dirt on our windows.

How does self-cleaning glass pane work?

The secret is in the hydrophilic and photocatalytic coat on the inside of the glass pane. The photocatalysis process is used here, that is decomposition of organic pollutants deposited on the surface of the pane with UV radiation. Hydrophilic properties of the coat make the decomposed dirt flow from the pane with rain or water. Moreover, hydrophilic properties contribute to uniform drying up of the whole pane after contact with water and does not leave any rain streaks.

Self-cleaning panes are often used in facilities with very large glazing area, where traditional cleaning of windows would be very difficult: sunrays and rain do the whole work here.

Self-cleaning panes can be also successfully used in residential houses, but one has to remember that the more UV rays the window receives, the faster it will decompose dirt.

Does it mean that with a self-cleaning pane we will not have to clean windows any more?

The hydrophilic and photocatalytic coat makes window cleaning much simpler, although, unfortunately, complete resignation of occasional cleaning of windows is not recommended. We also have to remember that a self-cleaning glass pane is not everything, if we want to have our windows last as long as possible they should be properly maintained (we recommend our article on “How to take care of your windows”).

With the innovation of the self-cleaning pane, we save time and money and we care about the environment (we use less water and chemical cleaners). With this technology, windows are clean for a longer time and their cleaning is considerably easier.
